We are currently using BudTool and implementing Veritas NetBackup as a replacement. We want to use NDMP to dump the filer's data off to a NetBackup server (big honkin' sun box w/ lots of library enclosed DLT7k's). Veritas says that in 3.2, they only support NDMP dump/restore to filer attached tape. In 3.4 they claim to support NDMP 3-way dump/restore from one NetApp to another NetApp with locally attached tape. So we are double hosed. Of course, BudTool effortlessly does NDMP to the filer attached tape, 3-way to another filer attached tape, and apparently right back into the BudTool host which is what we want with NetBackup.
Anyone else trying to do the same thing? Any other ideas short of sitting on Veritas?
On another topic entirely, does anyone have experience attaching many (2-4) DLT7k's per NetApp and using them as a backup tape server via 3-way NDMP? Something tells me that ONTAP and the filer are not designed to handle this well, but we'd like to see if anyone else is trying this. A possible solution for us would be using two or three filers with 4 drives attached to each as a pool of dump/restore servers for the other 20 or 30 filers.
Thanks!!

We have a pair of filers at the moment that we intend to direct attach to our library. We may get a third filer, which we may want to do 3-way NDMP with (or we may expand our library and direct attach it). We essentially gave up on Veritas in our quest to replace BudTool. We never could get an eval copy out of them, and they just don't seem that interested in our business.
Backup Express from SyncSort will do 3-way now (I've done that with the eval copy ; granted not to DLT7Ks - we don't trust those anymore). QuickRestore from Workstation Solutions is reported to do it (I'll be able to test that out next week). Time Navigator out of Quadratec Software won't (having to wait to test their NDMP support until we get our library hooked up).
Currently, Veritas netbackup (3.4) does NOT support having the tape library NOT attached to a filer. I find this annoying as well, as I like having a central tape library not directly attached to anything but the backup/media server itself. I'm awaiting word from their product dev group as to when that capability would be available, as I'm interested in that.
Apparently Legato Networker 6.01 will support this using their inline imagine product (don't have all the details yet), but I'm pretty much through with Legato (crap products, crap support), and their licensing for that capability makes Veritas look downright cheap.
My big gripe with NDMP as supported with Veritas is that it only allows ONE NDMP session per volume per tape drive. This is very inefficient, and would be be better to have multiple backup streams per volume, or at least be able to multiplex streams to the same tape so the DLTs work a bit harder. I'm awaiting an answer on that as a future ehnancement as well.
I feel your pain.
