data ontap 6.1x, nfs and cifs on f760s
we may need to rebuild our wins databases. we can re-register our nt servers after clearing wins by doing
nbtstat -RR
from the server.
how do you re-register a filer? restarting cifs will do it.
i tried
C:\WINNT>nbtstat -a file1 -RR
and got back
"Done Release and Refresh of Registered names"
but i don't know if it really did anything.
has anyone done this before, i didn't see anything in now other than restarting cifs.

Here's an undocumented feature... use ifconfig to re-up the interface (even tho it's already up), and it may well do the trick.

its interesting. we have atm and ethernet interfaces. i never had the ethernet interface registering in wins, but now i want to. so i take eo down remove the -wins and ifconfig on the console.
i get "All CIFS name registrations complete for local server" on the filer console, but the ethernet interface does not show up in wins.

WINS is a very interesting product of microsoft. How more you think about it, how less you understand the internals. But it can suprisse you.
That is the raison that we entered our filers (and some others NT-servers) manual (static mapping) in WINS. It works fine.
