Hello,
I'm wondering what is the best backup system for saving big netapps we have tried alot of solutions , but we finished by running 3 sets of netapp in snapmirror so A(master) replicates to B and C (slaves) all have now raid_dp enabled and spare around . So we have realtime B and C backups (we may cluster A and B) .
But as its quite expensive "backup" i'm looking for some classic backup with tapes for example but i know from the past that tapes can be big pain to manage (specialy as we have around 2.5T of data on A)
Anybody have some "tape backup" that realy works ?
sub question : anybody have tried to attach a cheap ide raid shelf to scsi port of the netapp and use it as backup ?
today its cheap to have 14x300 gig ide disk array with scsi port , so it could be better than tapes if its directly attached to the netapp , nan ?
Best regards cb
We use Reliaty Backup (soon to be Oracle Backup, http://otn.oracle.com/deploy/availability/Reliaty). While it has its warts, it is the best commercial backup utility that we have seen. It won't be marketed again until Oracle re-releases it, which they've been promising for a while.
We have 6 LTO2 drives in an HP ESL9595 (really a Quantum/ATL P7000) tape library. These drives are connected to a Compaq M2402 (really a Crossroads 10000) network storage router to convert their SCSI signals to fibre channel. The fibre channel output of this runs to a Compaq SANswitch 16 (Brocade Silkworm 2800, I think), and each of our four NetApp file servers is connected to the FC switch.
We back up 15-20TB each weekend on about 35-40 LTO2 tapes. Once a month, we back up all 30TB of data, onto about 70 LTO2 tapes. This system has been very reliable. We do a lot of restores, and we have had very few problems in the two years we've been using it.
