There's no problem using FC8 and FC9 shelves in the same system. We did run into an issue with some newer 18GB drives not working in an old FC8 shelf (would have been fixed by an upgrade of ONTAP, but the customer was unwilling to do that at the time). You also have to consider the max capacity of the box. Other than that, you should have no problem using the FC9 and 36's in the same system with FC8's and 18's.
