Many recent versions of ONTAP also provide a regular command for this:

disk zero spares

If you add a disk to a filer that is not zero'd it seems to create a new volume and place that disk in the volume. It's never been a problem for us, but you do need to destroy that volume to add the disk

to your spares.

We are planning on retiring one of our F720s and keeping it to use the parts as spares. Is there anything we need to do before the shutdown so that the individual disks can be pulled and used as replacements in other 720s? I'm not trying to move any data, just grab individual disks that are part of a an existing volume on the retired 720 and use them as hot spares on another 720.
