thanks a lot for your reply, i think this is the only possibility we have. But there is one question left, how can i access this "snapshot-LUN" in case i need to restore a special file and not the whole LUN.
I thought of copying data with ndmpcopy into another volume, add the copied LUN to the igroup, connect that copied LUN with the target and access the requested file. Or is there an easier way??

Creating a snapshot of a Boot LUN is a bit tricky. Even with Snapdrive, we cannot positively guarantee the consistency of the Boot LUN. Microsoft doesn't give us an API call into the OS to completely quiesce the I/O before creating the snapshot. Even with Snapdrive, you will see a popup indicating this fact before creating the snapshot.
We've completed a LOT of testing and determined that restoring a snapshot of a boot LUN created this way is roughly equivalent to rebooting the Windows host by pressing the reset button on the front while the OS is up and running.
The best way to create a snapshot of the boot LUN is to shut down the host OS, telnet to the filer and create a snapshot from there. That way, all I/O from the host is shut down and you'll get a clean, consistent snapshot.

we have a windows server which boots from a LUN on a filer. The server has a hardware ISCSI controller which connects the LUN with the server and presents it as a bootable device.
I now wonder if there is a possibility of making snapshots of the volume containig the LUN's. And if yes i do not know how to access this LUN without the help of snapdrive.
Anybody a good idea or is it impossible?

DataONTAP's cloning feature ?
You could clone the lun, mount the clone via iscsi and recover the specific flie you're looking for. Should save you the trouble of duping the entire lun.
