Hello All,
Is anyone familiar with any issues between DOT 8.1 7-mode CIFS/SMB and Windows 8.1? Users are reporting error pop-ups when they try to access but so far all I have to go on are pretty generic Windows squawk boxes.

Have you tried a more recent version of ONTAP more in line with the timeline of Win8.1? I am *not* saying 8.2 here....just a more recent version of 8.1 (like 8.1.2 or newer ...current is 8.1.4P1)
You may be hitting some incompatability with the earlier ONTAP version. Historically, NetApp will fix the code within 90 days to be compatible with CIFS versions

Have you tried to modify this options?
cifs.smb2.enable cifs.smb2.signing.required cifs.smb2_1.branch_cache.enable cifs.smb2_1.branch_cache.hash_time_out
Do you have vscan enabled? Did you made some adjust in the TCP stack? Windows time. Make sure MTU is identical in all the network path.

Been struggling to find the time to get us past DOT 8.1, will dig into the docs for the details of the smb2 and signing options, I'm betting the trouble is in there somewhere...

Have you tried to restart the CIFS service? Did you check that all the network path/components are correct?
MTU Sizes FlowControls Clients firewalls TCP Window Sizes
I had a problem with CIFS and the problem was a MTU issue. I spend a lot of time troubleshooting this one.

Is the problem with just 8.1 or does it happen with 8 as well? If I remember correctly, Windows 8/2012 introduced two compatibility issues - SMB 2/3 client expected negotiation errors to be signed and Resource SID Compression http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2686098 http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2774190
I believe Resource SID Compression only comes into play if you have DCs that are 2012 You can work around the negotiation issue by disabling secure negotiate on the clients or enabling signing on the NetApp (disabling SMB 2 on either or both ends may also work - I can't remember)
