As a follow-up to the following, can I use any old wide-scsi storage shelf with an F230 or does specifically the "Storage Shelf 2" need to be used?
Thanks, Chris

Anyone have drives/shelves for an F230 that they want to unload cheap? I'll pay for shipping plus maybe a little something more if it is reasonable...
Also, any recent news on the hobbiest licensing for Data ONTAP?
Thanks, Chris
Can someone please setup a seperate list for these 'wtb' and 'hobbyists' posts? I get a ton of e-mail, and would greatly appreciate it if this list stays technical, and not getting swamped with emails from people trying to run a filer at home.
And, all the info you need for the below is online. Do some searches and leave this list alone for some real issues.

I just want to put in my 2 cents on this issue, and say that I like reading the 'wtb' and 'hobbyist' postings. This list is perhaps the lowest traffic list I am on, and I certainly don't mind getting that mail. Very little of the mail that comes across this list is directly relevant to me, so "real issues" are obviously personal opinion, and thus hard to segregate from the rest of the traffic.
If you (kyle) want to set up a list for those purposes, I'm certainly not saying that you shouldn't bother. It might very well be useful for the people who have been posting on those topics.

Uhm, most of us run these in real production networks as well.
I vote that it just sticks with the one list.
Period.

Odd...I notice that Mr. Caputo is asking a technical question on this list - why are you so hot to kick him off of it?
I have searched (now.netapp and google) and have not found any technical info on the "Storage Shelf 2" that would be useful for building a compatible shelf. My experiments so far have produced a fault message from ONTAP in regards to the shelf, which makes me wonder if the recommended shelf has a SCSI ID itself and that ONTAP queries/interacts with that SCSI ID for shelf health and possible hot-swap related stuff.
I am inclined to not worry about it, but doing so means that that the LCD readout on the front of the box indicates shelf fault rather than activity info when running.
Any insights welcome.
Chris

I've got a "Filers at Home" list, but it hasn't had any traffic lately:

Still waiting on word back from someone @ NetApp about an "official" home user/hobbyist license program as well.
