We agree that rsh hosts shouldn't need to be in "options telnet.hosts" - this is ridiculous. NetApp needs to revert this behaviour so that hosts.equiv is all that is necessary for rsh access.
We agree as well. This ill-advised change to the behaviour of rsh will be backed-out at the earliest opportunity, including if possible the maintenance releases of 5.3. This change was made some time ago (introduced in 5.3) before there was a more formal review process. We tried to address the issue with documentation but customers continue to run into problems.
We now have (and have had for the past year) an official and active "UI Review" process. Our developers are instructed:
"If you're developing a new feature, or modifying or removing an existing feature, and the feature has an interface that's visible to customers, you need to get the change reviewed by the UI Review Team."
The UI Review Team includes representatives from each engineering group (including TechPubs) and Customer Satisfaction. UI changes are discussed at length before being approved by this team. Naturally, the goal is to produce better user interfaces and prevent ill-advised changes from affecting our customers.
