The problem isn't just with the server, it's the client as well. Any Unix-based
NFS client will also operate in a case-sensitive manner, as far as I know.
Some people have used smbfs (on Linux/BSD+others?) to do achieve case
insensitivity, since that uses CIFS to access files. There is another Unix
client filesystem called Sharity that can do this for Solaris and several other
platforms, I think. I can't vouch for how these work with the filer, but I have
heard of people successfully using them.
These Unix CIFS filesystems have some definite limitations, but they may be ok
for what you are doing.

Subject: CIFS/NFS case sensitivity...
Reading info about case sensitivity and how the filer handles such via
CIFS & NFS clients, Netapp says that CIFS is case insensitive
(but case
preserving) and that NFS is case sensitive.
Can one make NFS shared files NOT be case sensitive?
I'm assuming this is just how NFS works, but wondered if
there was some
option that could be set that would allow NFS to ignore case
on the filer.
Any ideas on this would be appreciated.
