We've been using Workstation Solutions Quick Restore to backup an F740(DOT5.2.3) via NDMP to an Exabyte 220 Mammoth library for a couple of months now. I've found it to be an excellent combination. One of the nice things about WS is that if you do find a bug they'll fix it quick. I haven't had any problems with the filer crashing while backing up.

hi lisa ...
are you a happy budtool user ;-)
i'd really like to here about the demo. a reliable, affordable NDMP backup solution would be great!

Actually Workstation Solutions has an NDMP client too. They seem to be a bit cheaper than Veritas, but less scalable for very large installations. For me, that's fine. Especially considering it's about 1/3 the price.
I'm demo'ing the Workstation Solutions product next week and will post the results if folks are interested. We're also a current Budtool customer.

Does QR support 3-way NDMP dumps where the tape library is located on a Solaris host (i.e., does QR come with an ndmpd for Solaris)? Veritas also does 3-way, but only to a tape drive attached to another filer. I need something that can efficiently handle over a dozen filers dumping to a couple of Solaris boxes sharing a single stacker (like an X200 Mammoth2 library or something).
I was told by the QR people that you can backup *any* QR-supported platform to a tape drive attached on the NetApp....not just NDMP. That is what they say differentiates them from everyone else.
See: http://www.worksta.com/ndmp3.htm for a picture.

Hrm, that's not what I need either. ;-) Can they do that, but with the tape drive attached to the UNIX host? I would like to control and stream backups from a fleet of filers via NDMP, back to a UNIX host with a tape stacker. I don't know of any software that can do that yet.
Well, after further investigation, QR 2.6 which will be out sometime this month, You *will* be able to do just that....
Put the tape devices on *any* supported QR 2.6 client and then use NDMP to backup to them ... even a NetApp!

Netbackup will do this too. We found that out the hard way when we found it was using the tape drive that is direct connected to our Netapp to backup a unix system. That creates huge amounts of network traffic, so we disbled that feature. :-)

Today, Quick Restore supports 3-way backup and recovery where the tape library is connected to another filer. At the next release (announcement shortly) QR includes an NDMP daemon to support filer backup/recovery to/from Solaris, Linux, HP-UX, SGI, NCR(!), and AIX. Btw, a tangential benefit of using such a configuration is that QR supports a broader spectrum of tape drives than Ontap, including 4mm, 8mm (Exabyte, AIT, VXA), DLT, Ampex DD-2, etc.
