I'm not sure I can agree with that.

I'm just thinking of the MIPS R1{0,2}K and ULTRASPARC II - those are fabless designs and they are both extant and, as far as I can tell, thriving.

Digital were making out that having their own fabs was an advantage...now they're making out that they weren't actually generating revenue in the way Digital likes. *shrug*

Besides I suspect that NetApp development could shift to another platform with (to the outside at least) consummate ease if other hot chips seem more viable. I'd be thinking of the TI DSPs myself.
