Anyone had any experience setting this? can we do it on a production filer and not crash? Can we set it back and still not crash if it does something horrid?
Well, in principle this should be just fine. YMMV. Log bugs if it doesn't work. 8)
Remember to check all the settings on the clients: on the interfaces, the stack and the higher-level protocol as appropriate. Suns, by way of example, have oodles of things to set, as came up recently. The jury's still out on how much you can do on the client, but I'd say it's leaning toward 'quite a bit'.
Also use whatever network tools you have, managed switches etc. to check for the usual problems with performance: collisions, duplex confusions, high broadcasts, other major traffic sources on the same or intervening segments. If you overlook something in this area then you might find tweaking the nfs.udp.xfersize is a retrograde change, against expectation. Then again, maybe I'm explaining how to suck eggs here.
