Hey Micheal, thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately we don't have a Linux

box and we're running only CIFS sessions on the filer, we're an all NT shop.

You could use a Linux box to mount the filer with NFS or SMB. Create a file that would be used as the compressed (or encrypted) filesystem on the filer. Use a special mount program to do the compression and to mount the filesystem.

Then export the filesystem from the Linux box as NFS and/or SMB.

I was told that there is no native tool on the filer that compresses data on

the volumes (like you would on a hard drive)

Is there any 3rd party utils that anyone has encountered that can do this? Otherwise, I was thinking I would just use winzip as someone from netapp suggested.
