irfiles.company.corp is in dns already
You can't
CIFS naming paths are \servername\sharename

Not true.
You can use a netbios alias:

Correct, but it still requires access to the data via \netbios-alias\share rather than just \share.
NetBIOS aliases also requires a running WINS server if you're traversing subnets to access the server. WINS is getting to be a rare thing in my experience.

Yea, I saw that after I posted. My apologies. I read the question wrong. :)

Yep. Bill is correct, you have to do \server-name\share-name for CIFS*. I believe the closest you could come with CIFS is to alias "irfl2.company.corp" as "irfiles.company.corp" in DNS.
If all clients have the proper DNS suffix search order defined, then you could map \irfiles\irfiles. This would also require a NetBIOS alias to be setup on the filer if you still have WINS around for name resolution.
*NFS lets you get around this by using the "alias=" export option.
