That was it. The DOS program was performing "search"es of hundreds of files in one directory. The problem became noticeable because the purge of the filers in that directory has been failing, allowing the files to accumulate.

Again, the filers still have an issue handling search and the problem still occurs, but it is much less noticeable now that there are only a few dozen instead of a few hundred files involved.
