Hey there,
we're getting a new FAS8020 during the next weeks and my task now is to move all the data on our current 7 mode filers onto the new one. I've already made non disruptive plans for the VMware datastores and all the NFS shares, so that's not an issue anymore - but I'm wondering about how to non disruptively migrate my iSCSI LUNs presented to my microsoft failover clusters.
Any ideas on that? I'm thinking about setting up some kind of software RAID 1 (if that's supported) on the host side with the new and the old LUNs like we did back in the good old days when we used Veritas volume manager on EMC boxes, but I'm not sure if that's a supported scenario.
I'm pretty sure some of you have gone through that already so I would be thankful for any ideas in that regard.
Best,

Hi. If you have access to fieldportal.netapp.com you can read Clustered Data ONTAP Unified Transition Methodology Playbook for NetApp Partners https://fieldportal.netapp.com/?oparams=224360 One of the ways to migrate iSCSI and FC LUNs is to use SnapMirror. Even if you don't have licenses, you can always obtain evaluation license.

Hi,
thanks, I was aware of the availability of snapmirror but that’s not nondisruptive as far as I know – but I’ll have a look.

Unless something has changed, You can migrate nearly all data except LUN's (iscsi/fC).
Other tools/utilities must be used for iSCSI and FC LUN files. (like a DTA or creating New LUNS on the Cluster and using some host-specific copy)

Hi,
yah, that's exactly what I'm looking for - migrating LUNs on the fly without any downtime. If that requires some work on the host system to set up a mirror or something like that inbefore I don't care, I'd just like to see if that's possible at all and what the experiences in this list are with NDR migrations of LUNs.

At my company we have done many host-based migrations, but I've never personally done one with Windows hosts -- only Linux, AIX, Solaris and HP/UX.
Still, it shouldn't matter what the underlying storage is. If your host has proper multipathing and logical volume support, you can present a second LUN, mirror it to the first, and detach/remove the first when done.
