Hello,
we received a couple netapp filers and have some questions about upgrading them.
1) what version of linux will run on these filers (preferably gentoo) and what is the upgrade procedure?
2) setting up volumes does not allow me to format them with EXT3 or ReiserFS currently so i will need to know how that is done for increased filesystem performance and reliability
3) what brand/type of off the shelf disks will work with these systems?

What kind of filers are these? Some old 540's or 760's? What's the model type?

Hi there 1) Data ONTAP != Linux (any version) This is not to say that you couldn't come up with a bootloader (and drivers, etc.) to run a Linux on it, but then it wouldn't be a filer any more. Most of the recent models (last 5 years) use Intel or AMD. In fact, the F85 and F87 were based on Dell servers (hance the only ones in recent history with a standard BIOS). I'm sure you could even compile Linux for the MIPS processors on a FAS250/270, or for the Alpha procs in the F600 and F700 series (if it hasn't already been done).
2) That's right. It's ONTAP. It uses WAFL.
3) Nothing off the shelf works with a filer (at least as long as it's running ONTAP). NetApp won't trust your important data to disks NetApp didn't test, certify, and fix firmware bugs for.
Let us know
Have fun!

You ssh to 127.0.0.1, login as root and run rm -rf /
After a few minutes, you'll have a machine that will r0x0rs teh storage world.
