So, in a conclusion, you can't bypass NFS, NetApps NFS servers are performant, not expensive NFS/CIFS servers, but not very reliable. No chance for 99% uptime.
Despite your particular experiences, I believe that Netapp has a measured uptime far in excess of 99% over all of their customer base. You could ask them for the precise figures. Obviously some customers will fall below this level. A lot of components fail due to improper handling or shipping.

How should we do a "improper handling" with components mostly builtin in a NetApp since months? The NetApps are all in airconditioned rooms with restricted access. You probably think we've not enough competence for administering filers correctly, but if so, why we don't have the same problems with all the other systems like Sun E5500, HP, Auspex, Compaq...? They're all running well since years...
Hi ,
It seems that you're medium happy with your filers. We have just choosen them versus SUN NFS cluster a few time ago and all customers I've speaken with were happy fo it. did you get any bad experiences, experience which can help ?? In general, did anybody get some general remarks about Clustering. * what about the FC-AL board ?? how can we check that out ???
Thanx
