Some answers:

a) I would have a separate volume with at least 6 to 8 disks. b) Yes, you could but I wouldn't recommend it. It just makes things more complicated to troubleshoot. c) Yes. d) It depends on what other data you have on that same volume. If it is just home directory or just files then it really doesn't matter. You have to lock the VOB, snapshot the volume where the VOB data is and then unlock the VOB.
