Please use the latest version of Backup Express. There was a bug that has since been fixed. We will now use MD5 authentication during initial configuration of a node.
Ontap 6.4 documentation (Data Protection Guide) lists the steps that you can perform to setup a non-root user account for NDMP access.

It will let you change to MD5 AFTER you have first connected via
plaintext.
I have found no way to change the DEFAULT setting of BackupExpress.

Syncsort Backup Express allows the user to choose what authentication
method
is used for NDMP operations. If MD5 is picked, an encrypted password is transmitted.

Is there anyway to configure a filer so that one does not have to use
the
root account for NDMP operations? It is against all generally
acceptable
guidelines to allow root access to a system over a network. Any
software
package that would be used to perform NDMP backups would have to pass
the
root id and password over the network. In the case of some products it
is
in plaintext (SyncSort BackupExpress uses plaintext) thus making and
entire
filer system vulnerable.
