I would say it's Veritas-related, since while testing Atempo Time Navigator w/ NDMP, we could restore files elsewhere without overwriting the original ones. Just to moderate my answer: we take a tape backup of SnapVault data, so the data is read-only, and obviously, it can't be overwritten. But as far as I could see, I didn't notice anything that could allude to an overwriting of the original data.

PS: why not upgrade to NetBackup 4.5 ?

Is the following true for all implimentations of NDMP, or just for Veritas? This bit us because we went to restore some files, and the "unmark all" button did not, and we restored older files over newer. We now restore to a Restored_Files qtree for NetApp filers and let the users examine and move the data they want back.

For NDMP restores, existing files are always overwritten, due to the nature of NDMP. On pages 46 and 47 in the NetBackup 3.4 NDMP System Administrator's Guide it says: "Caution: An NDMP restore always overwrites existing files."
