in my case it happend by accident :-) I did some tests about this issue and found out that sometimes after removing a disk from the shelf and insert it again the filer sees the disk as a new spare. But in most cases those disks failes again after a short time.

Sp is there any way to force a broken disk to be re-scanned and brought back into the spare pool? Or do I have to wait for it to happen naturally?

I managed to fix my six borken disks by using the 'disk unfail' command. And then I did a 'disk spare zero' to force them to be written too. Seems to have done the trick.
