Hi all, Has anyone ever seen a BMC deny access when using the root user password? I'm trying to reconfigure this system and get the BMC working, but whenever I SSH to the BMC it won't let me login using the root user password. I get a permission denied message as if the password were wrong.
Things I have tried:
BMC setup (several times with different IP addresses) BMC reboot (several times) Changed the root user password several times using passwd. Takeover/Giveback Verified that the password is less than 16 characters. Tried "root", "naroot", and "Administrator" to log into the BMC, all failed the same way. Ran through secureadmin setup again. Tried to SSH to the BMC from different hosts, both Windows and Linux. I can SSH to the controller itself just fine using the root user / password.
Anyone have any other ideas or see something that I'm missing? The only thing I haven't done yet is power cycle the controller, and that's just because I'm not anywhere near it.
Thanks, Brad
You would want to use the naroot account AFAIK. Are you running 7-Mode or GX/CDOT on this controller. If it's running GX/CDOT try with the admin account instead of naroot.
The only time this has happened to me in the past a reboot of the BMC cleared it.

I also saw a note on the interwebz saying that if you for some reason have ssh v1 enabled it will not allow you to login to the BMC, so perhaps check to see that only ssh v2 is enabled in options.

Brad,
Silly question but have you tried the “bmc reboot” command.
I remember when those things came out they quite often became inaccessible until you rebooted it.

Brad,
The correct login is definitely naroot which you tried (with the filer’s root password, which can’t be blank or 16+ characters, which you said it isn’t). I have seen in very rare cases corrupt bmc firmware or failed bmc circuitry, but it seems to be working relatively well, at least enough to take your config so I am not suspecting that.
You could try to access the bmc via the serial port if you have console access (Control-G to enter bmc, Control-D to exit) to see if the problems persist via that method, as it should bypass the password. It could be a faulty physical port on the filer or switch or faulty cable cable if the serial method works but ssh does not. You could also try reflashing or upgrading the bmc firmware- you are on 1.3 and I believe 1.6 is the most current.
Thank you, Tim

Verified that the password is less than 16 characters.
There was a bug in the early versions of Ontap 8. Password length had to be 8 characters.
