It should be. It kind of depends on the software you are using. If you're just using our dump and mt commands on the filer, then just use non-rewinding tape devices and dump again.
Then when you do finally rewind you can use mt to fast forward past a specific number of EOFs.
Other backup software may have this feature built-in and I can't speak for most of them, but at least natively it's possible.
