I have a volume of 400 gb total will 230 gb data on it. Can I snapmirror this on a smaller 300 gb volume..? thanks, prem
nope.
snap mirror is a front to vol copy. think of vol copy as "dd" ie: block level.
even if the target is larger than the amount of source actually used, the vol copy will fail if the target is smaller than the source.

I have done this in the past using ndmpcopy, which does preserve ACLs, etc.
You can find the software on the NOW site: now.netapp.com.

As some1 just explained it to me, ndmpcopy is much less efficient than snapmirror, because snapmirror only transfers the blocks that have been changed. So if you have a WAN with 2 sites and you wanna synchronize data between them for disaster prevention, then ndmpcopy become prohibitive on a fair size volumes ( say, 500GB and higher ). Please correct me if something above doesn't make sense.

Does this include or exclude snap reserve space? Vol copy does not require that you duplicate snapshots of a volume, so I assume SnapMirror is the same?
