Is anyone using CommVault Galaxy for backups of Filers, as well as for their HSM (archiving) product? Any horror stories?
John
Hi
I haven't used the HSM side of it, but galaxy is really good for filer backups. Havent had a problem with it yet.
cheers

I have done a few implementations of this now.
Love the backup, love the HSM.
ONE CAVEAT with the new 7.0 code for the File Share Archiver. It has a new feature that uses fpolicy for the stub retrieval on the HSM side, and that works VERY well, EXCEPT when your user that triggers the recovery is attempting to access a stubbed file in a share that is an "auto-home" map. In this case the Commvault server tries to put the file in the autohome share, which of course doesn't exist for the commvault account's context. They know about the problem now, not sure how/if they will fix it.
If you aren't using AutoHome, this is not an issue and I strongly recommend the package. If you are using Autohome, you'll have to use the version of the file share archiver that requires an .msi to be installed on any client that needs to trigger a file recovery. Not the end of the world, but a little more cumbersome.

Great to hear! We're intrigued by the HSM part of it.

After doing some more research, we find that the F-policy stuff requires that we have CIFS licenses, which is a bummer since we only have one filer with CIFS at this time. I guess we need to factor in the cost of CIFS into our budget.
Now just to be clear here, you're not talking NFS when you talk about the auto-home map are you? We're 95% an NFS shop, and we heavily use NFS based automount for home directories and data directories.

This .msi sounds like you're talking about a Window client, correct? We're only concerned about Linux and Solaris NFS clients right now, and how we'll they'll work with the HSM aspects of CommVault. Or any other HSM solution.
I guess I should have been more explicit in my question, mea culpa.
