Does anybody know if it safe to simply swap heads between a F720 and a F740 filer?
Since the OS and configuration is on the disks I assume this will work ok as long as the OS and/or configuration is not specific to either of these 2 models?

yes you can do this pretty safely. the filer will complain about NVRAM settings changing on you but you can ignore those warnings. make sure your FCAL cards, etc are in the proper slots, etc. We keep all of our cards in their ideal slots so swapping heads has never complained about anything else besides the settings stored in NVRAM.
make sure you have backups just in case, though.

forget aboute FCAL cards as disks on the filer are autoboot, just focus on network card being in the same slot or modify /etc/rc and eventually /etc/hosts
Whew..... many thanks to all the people who replied. Everybody said the same thing, yes it will work ok, but be careful to make sure the cards are in the same slot or edit the rc file before shutdown.
Thanks everybody.
