I get the feeling that all the NetApp employees have been told to subscribe to the list, but not *how* ;-)

Perhaps a form on your intranet (or on NOW) that subscribes the person might be handy... It is what we ended up doing.

Perhaps netapp could create a local reflector so that they only need to maintain one subscription to toasters. Not only would it decrease load on the listserv, but it would avoid the steady flow of subscribe requests for their employees.
Moreover, it would avoid the next few questions:
1) Does netapp require its employees to subscribe to this list?
2) Is netapp hiring a bunch of new people?
(and just because I've gone to all the trouble of writing out a mail message, I'll ask:) 3) What's the status of java?
4) Can someone point me to some reference for webnfs (is this cifs?)

Can't recall the URL off the top of my head but Sun had a white paper on it. Might want to search for Solaris 2.6 and webnfs.

Plus maintain annonimity (if so desired) :) I think it is great that so many folks are on the list. Lots of lurkers, but good participants.
| 1) Does netapp require its employees to subscribe to this list?
Doubtful. Perhaps it is suggested for some folks. That would almost be akin to Cisco requiring that all folks read the cisco newsgroup (which they may).
| 2) Is netapp hiring a bunch of new people?
Are you looking for a job? :)

Check out:
for all relevant info. I don't know if you meant wbnfs in general or in relation to the filers.
Does any client support webnfs yet? Netscape claimed they would but I have yet to see it. Perhaps in the fabled 5.0 release....

I didn't catch the cifs at the end in the first pass; sorry about that.
No, webnfs is different than cifs. cifs is akin to samba/syntax. It allows win95/winnt clients to "mount" shares from the filer (just as if it were an nt server). I believe the new version of cifs also does locking between nfs and cifs clients.
Hope this helps.

Doubtful.
We don't. (*I* don't subscribe to it, or even to the local exploder; mail sent to most mailing lists here is archived, and I periodically read the archive - perhaps this is a job for a mail-to-news gateway....)

You are not mistaken - we do.
Somebody here recently sent out, to a mailing list that includes everybody at NetApp, mail that explains how to join a mailing list (i.e., send mail to the "-request" address, *NOT* to the list), and explains that we have a local exploder.
Hopefully, that will reduce the level of "subscribe" noise from NetApp employees, at least. I'll also look into adding that to stuff given to every new employee (something that should probably be done by every other organization that provides Internet e-mail access, although that, like every other piece of documentation that explains how to do stuff, brings to mind the old saying "you can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drink").
STOP, PLEASE STOP!
:-)

Hi Tom:
Would it be completely inappropriate to post a product announcement to the list that would be of interest to the subscribers?
(I presuming it would, but thought I'd ask anyway...)

We've had a local reflector for quite some time, but it's clear that it hasn't done a whole lot towards solving the last problem you mention.
Moreover, it would avoid the next few questions:
- Does netapp require its employees to subscribe to this list?
No.
- Is netapp hiring a bunch of new people?
Yes.

I just finished brewing my afternoon pot of Starbucks.

WebNFS and CIFS are two entirely different things. Sun's WebNFS announcement took Microsoft by surprise; their hurried response was to rechristen SMB (Server Message Block) network file access protocol as CIFS (Common Internet File System).
See http://www.sun.com/webnfs/ for info on WebNFS, including the white paper describing what it is and how it differs from basic NFS.
NetApp has been shipping WebNFS for a while now. I'm not sure which version, but 4.1 seems about right.
