Ok, this has gotten to be the only source of Spam in my inbox. Surely there is a minimum level of filtering that can be done to block messages like this.

I certainly wouldn't be so bold as to claim it's the _only_ spam in mine, but it's a very significant proportion. My personal mail filter depends heavily on return path (envelope sender) values, so that mailing lists that let through spam are a real pain.
Where is fubar when we need him to explain that mathworks can only use mailing list software that is mumblety-mumble years old? :-)

erm.. I've pointed this out before. All that they have to do is set the mailing list so that only members can post...
if they can't be bothered or just don't have the time to upgrade the maialing list, I gladly volunteer to host it...

Well, let's not repeat the episode of May-July 2002 when the list was closed in just that way, following a major outbreak of spam, and the result was that no-one at NetApp could post to it any longer (because they got it through a local expander).
Search for "where are they now?" in the archives ...

I'm not going to make unwise offers like that until our Mail Support people have their new improved list-management system (with bells on) working ... Particularly as I know from experience that managing a mailing list is a thankless task, and never ever trouble free!
That said, I would like to see some tweaking at mathworks to get rid of more of the spam, if that is at all possible.

Folks,
Sorry, really, to those who are bothered by spam to this list. Trust us - we do all we can to clean the stream. We've got three layers of filters involved on this list. We don't feel it would be prudent to announce on a public list just what those layers entail. No filter will be perfect - spam will always find a way.
We can't set the list to "members post only" because NetApp, among others uses an exploder inside their location and a lot of the really good stuff on the list comes from NetApp folks that are behind that exploder.
I possible, we'll put together some numbers to let y'all know what the rate of ham to spam is for the list...in our copious free time! <grin>
