Hi All
We are currently running over 140 Sun servers with 7 Netapp Filers. I have checked the Netapp filers and have found they are all running UDP with NFS version 3.
TCP is disabled, however, I was under the impression that TCP would be a better prot to use.
Could anyone tell me what they think with regards to the differences and pro's and cons of the 2 different protocols
Thanks KEVIN

Typically you want to run NFS over UDP if your clients are topologically close to the server, since UDP has less overhead than TCP.
If you have, say, a couple of routers between the server and the client, and you might run into some package loss, you might benefit from running over TCP.
This is the theory. In practice it seems NFS over TCP sometimes is a little bit faster than UDP even if you're on the same LAN, depending on the involved software and hardware and the phase of the moon.
However, in most scenarios, UDP *is* faster than TCP.
Just went to a performance tuning seminar given by Adrian Cockroft last week and this topic was covered.
In a nutshell, if your traffic pattern is high then TCP is the way to go. At lower utilization UDP is faster, but it drops off significantly under heavy load. TCP requires more overhead in the beginning making it slower under light loads, but it is consistant right up to threshold.

Would someone fill us (well, me anyway) in on how to enable TCP NFS on Filers, and under what versions of OnTap it's even possible?
Thanks,
