My thanks. I've received several replies. The summary is:

Just make the path be something like

/vol/myvolume

which I was already doing.

One person asked about existence of /etc on each volume. Yup. It's there, and writable by root (who runs the backup).

The Budtool support folk have had this question pending for a while; I've just stirred them up again this morning, I hope.-
