Hi all i am a newbie to storage industry but would like to change my newbie lable , i was going through a doc but got confused with following emerging technologies and protocols
can some one explain me whats the difference between 1) FCP 2) iscsi 3) FC/IP and 4) iFCP
as per my understand FCP and ISCSI is a replacement of each other means FCP works by encapsulating scsi in to the fiber channel where as iscsi works by encapsulating scsi into IP
i also understands that FC/IP is used to bridge multiple SAN's which are geographically saperated using a traditional IP network by encapsulating fiber channel frames within TCP ,
but please let me know what iFCP its function , and i am very intrested in knowing is it possible to replace any of these protocols with the other one ? i mean do they provide options for each other ? or for some other purpose ?

good question, i don't know, i have a limited experience on iSCSI the best is to experiment with small LUN and see what happen cu

my opinion is iFCP is the same as what you call FC/IP (encapsulate FC - wich encapsulate SCSI - in TCP/IP blocks) but i might be wrong as i don't know a lot about FCP
from what i know, you can't exchange one for the other : you have the iSCSI world on one side (SCSI protocol encapsulated in Ethernet TCP/IP) and FCP world in other hand (SCSI protocol encapsulated in Fiber Channel protocol - FC) the first incompatibility between the two world are the material iSCSI runs with ethernet switch (cheap) FCP runs with FC switch (very expensive)
Netapp can manage the two world but without being able to mix there resource you can't access an FCP storage (requiring FC connectivity) behind a iSCSI compatible switch (ethernet)
as iSCSI runs over ethernet, you can wonder if FC/IP is able to work compatible with iSCSI i don't think so for me FC/IP is another protocol it would like to mount a CIFS share over NFS, it can't work (without samba) althought that, is it true to say iSCSI share the FC philosophy (encapsulate raw data blocks and SCSI request inside upper level blocks : ethernet for iSCSI and FC for FCP) cu
