We are testing a restore from tape on to our non clustered 820. We are using Veritas Data Center 3.41 and the security seems to get lost on the restore. Currently we are using CIFS exclusively on this filer, and we are running ONTAP 6.01 r3. The backup an restore are initiated by our backup server which is running Solaris 2.8 64 bit and we are using NDMP. We are licensed for NIS, but currently are not using this feature. Any ideas? Thanks Drew
Hi I had the same question, regarding this.. Please read on and you will find the answers with in this email.....
Regards Rahul
That should be possible, yes, with NDMP. It's called 3-way NDMP.
One filer is a tape host, the others are data movers. It would be better design for you though to connect all filers to library.... at least to my opinion... -----Original Message----- From: Rahul Kumar [mailto:Rahul.Kumar@sdrc.com] Sent: Wednesday, September 26, 2001 3:57 AM To: 'Traitel, Eyal' Subject: RE: CIFS and NFS permisions over NFS
Yes, i have one win2k server whih willbe backedup by veritas.
By the way i was wondering, if i connect one of the port of my tape library to netapp and the second will be connected to sun server. Can i back up the other 2 filers through the filer connected to the tape library also.
I mean to say
netappf-820------------>netapp740--------------->netappf740----------------- ---Tape Library<--------------------sun server...
If thats possible please let me know

Rahul,
You'll have to have a CIFS interim server for that - I guess you know that already...
Anyway - why not going for NDMP? It's where everyone is going, and where we and Veritas are good with.

Well what should we do........
Shall we use nt backup to backup the snapshot and pull it over to the tape library sitting on the sun server.
Thanks

Rahul,
If you backup a filer over NFS - you will lose CIFS ACLs.
If you backup a filer over CIFS - you will NOT lose NFS permissions, since we have a patented (or patent pending, excuse me but I'm not sure) to include NFS permissions in the CIFS traffic itself transparently, and restore it transparently.
Thus, if you have a qtree with both filer with NFS permissions AND files with CIFS ACLs you can backup using:
1. NDMP - Since it's filer native format of dump, it backups all special attributes 2. CIFS - Like I explained above 3. NFS - With the notion that you will lose ACL information
There are historic threads on this issue by the way. Eyal.

Hi All
What effects does backing up filer's mixed qtree data (filer permissions) over NFS using NetBackup 3.4. Can we restore the files from the tape library over NFS with nfs as well as cifs permissions
Help will be really appreciated.
Rahul
