Is there any way to use SSH to get to a server, so the password isn't broadcast over the network? If not, is there any other authentication method, or is it just straight telnet and console connections?

With the newer versions of ONTAP (5.3+ ?), you can get something called SecureAdmin for them which allows for ssh access.

Yes, Netapp makes a "SecureAdmin" product that's an ssh shell.

Yup... it's an add on. Given growing security concerns as a whole, it is a shame that NetApp doesn't just include it with the standard OS.

Until 20 September 2000, there is no way for NetApp to integrate SSH support into OnTap without paying gawdawful licensing fees to either DataFellows or RSA, Inc.
I suspect that the price of the ssh module will decrease significantly once the RSA patent expires and OpenSSL/OpenSSH become fair game for vendors.

NetApp? Price decrease? Sure.

hehee... esp. considering the price compared to a fully (or even halfly) loaded filer...
