Because the NetApp complexity and cost is actually superior to all the vendors I mention as my fall-back choices.
For many specific tasks, including other file and database servers, we do in fact use Sun and SGI. NetApp boxes provide vast, easily managed pools of disk that I rarely need to intervene with to keep running so their cost- effectiveness wrt my time is very high. Ditto the availability of the data we keep on them.
