The NetApp does support a /etc/nsswitch.conf file. We use it to do exactly what you suggest. I'm not sure which version first supported this but it's been available for quite a while.

# cat /etc/nsswitch.con ... passwd: files nis ... I have a feeling that as soon as you say nis.enable=1 it just stops using /etc/passwd...
