We are very happily using Ontap's dump program. We have a DLT7000 autoloader connected to a Solaris box, and use commands like this to back the filer up over a dedicated 100Mbps net:

rsh filer dump 0ubf 63 rmt@solaris-box:/dev/rmt/1ubn /vol/vol0/projects

It's been totally solid, and captures both CIFS and UNIX metadata, which is a requirement for us. This solution works well if you don't have too many filers, or too much data (we have 1 filer and <200GB). We abandonned paid for Legato licenses to implement this solution, BTW.

To me, a commercial solution would start to make sense if your numbers were significantly larger, or you wanted to take advantage of the NDMP protocol, or some of the more advanced libraries, etc. that are out there.

Otherwise, dump rocks!
