I have a situation where a disk failed and the rebuild started on the spare from another shelf of disks. The spare was larger than the original failed disk and I need that spare to be available for the aggregate using the larger disks.
How do I force the data off that disk and onto one of the other spare disks? Do I just wait for the rebuild to finish and then fail it?

That's what I'd do, followed by an unfail for the larger disk.

The disk replace command will do what you need:
filer> disk replace start <disk to be replaced name> <spare disk name>
this will copy the contents of the disk (no rebuild involved) and put the original disk in the spare pool. If a rebuild is currently in progress wait for it to finish before doing the disk replace

Thanks for this, I saw that command but I wanted to make sure that was what I needed. The disk is copying now and everything seems normal.
