Because each vfiler needs its own ip address there may not be a way to unassign the ip from the root vfiler (vfiler0) and assign it to a vfiler (vfiler1) with zero downtime.
You can certainly use a new ip for vfiler1 and make DNS changes so the old name points to the new ip. This isn't zero downtime, but depending on your DNS mechanics it can be very low.
If you're running cifs on vfiler0 and want to move those resources to vfiler1 you have no choice but to take a short outage since cifs is stateful and the mac address will be different between vfiler0 and 1.
We've been running multistore for over a year now and in most cases the vfiler resources are segregated from the physical vfiler0.
If others have an idea on how to do this with zero downtime I'd be happy to be wrong.

Hi,
Quick question for any multistore users out there. I have a physical filer that I want to convert to a vfiler. However, I need to keep the same IP and DNS information intact, and don't want to incur any downtime. Is there a way to do this without having to take down the physical filer to change it's name/ip? We are running 7.2.3 on a 6030 with CIFS & NFS.
Thanks! Scott

This was about the same conclusion we came to while working with Netapp PS for this implementation as well. We need to keep both IP (for some legacy connections we know about, but more for those we don't), and DNS intact for the new vfiler conversion. The physical box we will tag with a new IP and DNS name. Downtime it is, but minimal. Thanks for the quick response!
