Hello all... I am trying to get a tape backup of IBM N3600 (running ontap 7.2.2L1) from an HP MSL 6000 running 'HP OpenView Data Protector'. While adding the filer as a client to data protector, it asks for an agent to be installed on the filer. But the filer does not communicate with windows based backup server. What agent or patch etc do i need to install? and on the backup server side or the filer? Thanx

Consider pulling the data from the filer using NDMP.

The issue is on your backup software. I don't know so deeply but I can answer.
There are backup software that let you to backup CIFS shares (or NFS exports) without to sense the presence of some client agent on the server that host that share. And there are other software that MUST have an agent.
As example Symantec BackupExec can backup NetApp volumes (and its shares) also if the agent is not present: to do this you have to use credential of the BE account that are present also on the local administrator group of the filer. The same does NetBackup. On the other hand other software can't do this, they simply do not understand that is not a Windows server hosting a share and ask for the client...
You can try to bypass this hosting the shares of the Netapp on some DFS Windows server and try to backup this with the agent...not sure if it works...
