subst command - toasters

      hi,
our home dir structure does not match netapp's homedir options nor is net use
viable because we currently use
users\firstletterofuid\uid
users\n\nlehrer
so i am testing subst
subst h: \filer\users\n\nlehrer
it works, but if i try to get permissions for a file or dir i get:
no network provider accepted the given network path
domain is nt4
client is nt4
filer is 6.1.1r2, cifs and nfs.
anybody seen this?
