anyone know if the FE ports on the toasters can run full duplex?

Yes, but you need ONTAP 3.1.4d or 4.0 (cannot remember which version). The Znyx cards that NetApp uses are a based on a DEC chipset.
It may come down to what kind of switch/hub the filer connects to.
