I've just added a SAN based IBM 3500 (with 3592 EO5 drives in it) to my Nearstore R200 running 7.2.4. I now see a changer "mc0" on the filer.
I'd like to test the datapath to the drive from the filer and run a filer dump command, but the IBM guys say there is no way to mount a tape via their web interface. (I have yet to configure the changer in Tivoli)
Is there autochanger commands in OnTap ? I want to mount a tape via OnTap. I don't see any reference in the Data Protection Guide....
TIA
-Bob
Bob,
Data ONTAP(R) has no console commands for manipulating the changer. Library operations are expected to be done via NDMP or through a separate management interface into the library.

Thanks Steve,
That is entirely what I thought but, if there was a way, I figured the answer would be out here.
Sigh,
So I'm building a new TSM host for my shop to run manage the 3500, but I'm also leaving this position in 2 weeks... I wanted to see this work at least in theory (IE: Filer dump direct to the drive I now see there via X2051A) , and now realize I have to step up my time table if I want to see it all work, and finish the Solaris 10 host, install HBA, Zone it, install Tivoli, config NDMP in Tivoli....
Thanks for the bad news. :-)

You can always try to just insert a tape in a drive, it should load ... then you can dump all you want, as long as the robotics dont touch it ..
Since you said it was about testing the datapath .... that should do it ;)

That was my initial intention, but the mainframe guys (its a shared frame in which I have 200 slots and 2 drives) looked at me funny when I asked them to login to the interface they carved it up with and asked them to mount a tape for me..... "that's not possible, with the web interface, you do all that with Tivoli..."
I'm thinking they think I'll be asking them to mount tapes up for me all the time and won't even look to see if you can do it with the web interface. I cannot imagine that its not possible, but I don't have access.
Big Sigh.....

I dont know about the IBM robotics specifically, but any other robot I know, you can just open the door, grab a tape and insert it into a drive. The drive will load the tape and you're ready to go!
Offcourse, it does mean opening the door, which tends to put the robot in an idle state for a few minutes, which might something the mainframe will bark about.
Greets,
Nils
The IBM 3500 is a 650 something slot thingy with a "really fast" load arm. You do NOT want to stick you hand in there. :-)
There is a load door for adding tape's and I suppose on initial setup you'd open the "big" door idleing it as you said to bulk load tapes.
I share your assumption, there *should* be a way to manually mount a tape but alas...
Heck I did want to see how easily Tivoli integrated to papa IBM's lib anyways.
Off I go.

We use TSM with several 3592s to back up our NetApp gear via NDMP. Works fine, but all controlled via TSM jobs.
For certain tapes, we do have to work with the TSM Admins to have them load the tape we specifically want to use and run the dump\restore command to that specific tape device (no clue how they do it).
Can you not utilize NDMP and TSM scheduling to perform all of the backup\restores?

Cool Glen,
That is/was exactly my plan, get TSM configured to use the new Tape Drives, make the filer an NDMP client of TSM. But these drives are SAN based drives, and I
1. Needed to buy a X2051A for the R200 to see em. {that started working yesterday when the admin finally zoned me correctly} 2. Install HBA's in Prod TSM server but using test box I started building to learn: 2a. Proper Solaris 10 install/hardening process in academic environs which included updating Jumpstart to Sol 10 U5, from U3. 2b. Experiment with above test machine on "correct" drivers to use for Sol 10 U5 for Qlogic HBA's. 2c. In a perfect world with lots of time, install TSM 5.5 {prod is 5.4} and play with HBA based tape drives and newly set up NDMP on test box.
As I've gotten more familiar with the TSM environ, I've come to realize the TSM server could use overhaul of its Solaris build including local partitions {too small}, and aforementioned TSM to 5.5. To that end also re-arrange the TSM volumes on the R200 creating some new ones for growth and new ability to stage to tape. (I had NO tape before this in TSM).
I had the luxury of getting a hold of an identical Sun to conduct the testing on, and more and more it looks like it should become the new Prod box once play time is over.
