(I'm assuming this mailing list is still active.)
As an ice-breaker (teaser?), I thought I would share a useful hidden command that is present in NetApp Release 4.1d (and probably most others). It isn't listed in any online help (well, that's almost true) or documented anywhere, but you can use it anytime on the console. Note: I found this command on my own (i.e., it was not disclosed to me by NetApp).
hostname> help mv rename files hostname> mv usage: mv file1 file2 hostname> mv /test1 /test2
I'd like to see more information and discussion on this mailing list:
- problems you have experienced - any diagnostic utilities - undocumented commands - backup systems, experiences, etc. - Your experiences with other vendors (Auspex, Falcon, etc.) (positive or negative) - experiences with different NetApp models - using NetApps in growing or rapidly changing environments (for example, problems with having to move trees of data around often) - using more than a few NetApps - using one NetApp from multiple buildings (switching, routing, etc.) - performance tips, techniques, advice - and so on...
I'll be making more postings in the not-too-distant future. Hopefully, things will pick-up a bit.
Dan
yes, I have a good suggestion... Don't buy one.
In any case, I think I will be wanting to unload an F540, 256MB RAM, 8MB NVRAM, 100GB disk in the near future. It's about 4 months old, barely used.
If you're seriously interested, drop me a line, and we'll see if we can swing a deal.

I'm curious why you make this statement... In fact, now that I think about it, you really need to qualify this statement with "why" before making such a bold comment.
We've had nothing but success with our NetApps, and when we did have problems, their technical support was quick to help us--even when it wasn't the NetApp at fault (ie. the client machine was hosed, etc.) they would still make sure everything was working 100% again.

Yow. Did the filer not suit your needs?
I am simply curioous as to what would make someone want to dump their filer.

Have you tried using this to move directory hierarchies out of a snapshot?

Now all we need is an "rm" command local to the filer, that is also accessible via rsh. Then I could pipe the results of my news expiry to the Netapp, and have it delete the files locally instead of over NFS... :)
