Hello all…
We have a FAS2040, with 2 shelves, which are not under support…
One failed disk on shelf A, purchased disks, but i am afraid that will take about 1 week to receive them. What could happen if another disk fails (there is no more spares)?
There is no DATA at all on SHELF B, should i get one disk from shelf B and put on A?
If another disk goes bad, is it possible to make SHELF B takeover?
Is it possible to destroy the aggr on shelf B and add it to shelf A so we would have 12 spares?
What you guys would do ?
Thanks in advance!
Hi Camillo,
that depends on the RAID-level of the aggregate impacted. Can you post the output of `aggr status -r` on the console? If you did configure the system according to the best practices, you should have one hot spare disk and RAID-DP, so if the first disk fails, the hot spare will jump in and your raidgroup will be rebuilt, no issues, except for no more hot spares in your system.
If you do not have a hot spare but you do have RAID-DP, one of the two possible disks that can get broken already did so the next broken disk will still not be a problem, but if a third disk breaks, your data is at risk, to put it frankly.
If you do have a second aggregate with no data on it, it would be the best to destroy it `aggr destroy aggr_name` after putting it offline `aggr offline aggr_name` and once that's done, you will need to zero the new spare disks resulting out of this destroyed aggregate `disk zero spares`.
Once that's done, and as long as these disks belong to the controller with the already broken disks, one of the newly created spares should immediately jump in for the rebuild process.

If aggregate is raid4, filer will shut down after 24 hours to prevent data loss.

Is shelf B owned by the same filer?

Yes, of course.

I'd suggest to destroy aggregate B (without data) and zero the spares so if something happens with another productive disk you have a spare again.
If you do not need shelf B I'd zero disks, remove them (unown) from inventory, power off the shelf and keep the disks as spares. I've a 2040 here which is out of support too, It's just for testing purposes, but I've configured 2 Spares. A rebuild of the 1T SATA disks I use lasts for several hours. This is just to be sure it's not my fault if someone has stored productive data on the toaster :)
