is anyone using clearcase with remote storage pools on the network appliance? i've had the experience of keeping the storage pools local to the servers in the past, but with the new group i'm working in, i'm in the process of using the remote storage idea. in terms of $$s, scalability, backup, etc. i see a big plus. what are some experiences of other individuals doing this? i don't have enough data or experience to fall back on to convince other groups we're working with of the idea. any insight would be helpful (even if i have to go back to local storage, grrr).

Rational recently sent out an announcement that they are pursuing the idea of having the VOB storage in totality on a Netapp filer. That would include storage pools, Database , and all. You can get a copy of this statement from Netapp. I also know several companies in my area who are already running clearcase in this manner. I myself have run clearcase in the split manner where only the storage pools are on the filer. We noticed a significant increase in performance when the pools were migrated to Netapp.

That is how our company runs things. Seems to work great - you just need to specify the location of the storage pools when you make a view or a vob. Otherwise, it's flawless. All the users have their own private views on their desktops, and all the vobs are on netapp boxes.
