Can two arbitrary F740s be clustered together, or must they have been bought that way (i.e., two "F740c"s). I just inherited a second system and am considering turning it and my existing system into a clustered setup.

Hi Shaun:
You need some extra hardware to do that clustering and a license for the clustering from netapp. The hardware you will need (and may already have you need to check) is second LRC's in every self and the cabling for it and a servernet card in each head and the cabling for that. I think that's about it but maybe somebody else can verify.

Hi Shaun:
You need two copies of clustering software and LRC's for the shelves.

You'll probably have to buy some more hardware. First, you must have FCAL disks, since SCSI doesn't work for CF. Assuming you have FCAL disks and shelves, here is what you are missing:
On each head: 1 FCAL adapter (connects to partner's disk shelves) 1 ServerNet adapter (connects to other head)
On each shelf: 1 LRC (connects to partner's head)
And you need two CF software licenses.
In a CF environment, each shelf is connected to both heads. The primary FCAL card of each head is daisy chained to the primary LRCs of head's own shelves and the secondary FCAL card is daisy chained to the secondary LRCs of the partner's shelves. The two heads connect to each other with the ServerNet adapters.
When you by the "F740c" pair the two heads and the shelves have this hardware installed.
