Hi list. I have a 3170 running 8.0P1 7-Mode, and am having a problem with auto-assignment of disks. The unit reports that it can’t do auto-assign, because not all of the disks on the loop are owned by the same controller. I was under the impression that software ownership made that unnecessary (you can laugh), but it seems not. KB from 2014 says the same thing. So, question is, has anyone done anything like this (had to reassign a shedload of disks) to make auto-assign work, and could they pass any info on how I can fix this please?
Thanks,
Mark
You are probably confused. Software based disk ownership indeed does not require that full loops/stacks or even shelves are assigned to the same filer. But for auto-assignment algorithm to work this is required. Later versions allow auto-assignment work for full shelves, thus you can mix full shelves from different filers on the same loop/stack. It is not default and has to be enabled.
So there is nothing to fix, it works as designed ☺ Actually I usually disable auto-assignment and do it manually, to be absolutely sure each disk belongs where it should.

But to add to this - if you do want to allow autoassign to work, and have the disks in the ideal configuration, use the "disk replace" command to move specific disks in and out of aggregates to match the physical location requirements, or fully power down, and do a disk tango - pull them out and put them in the right place
Or, as Andrei said, leave as is and manually assign any replacement disks installed.
