Hi Kunihiko, The dump utility on a NetApp filer can only move data to a tape drive which is directly attached to a filer. It can not move data to a tape drive which is attached to a Sun server. If you wish to leave the tape drive attached to your Sun 450, you will need to buy a software package which can control that. Some of the backup packages which will allow you to move data from the filer, to the tape drive attached to the Sun are : WorkStation Solutions- Quick Restore v2.7; Syncsort - Backup Express v2.1.3; Bakbone - Netvault 6.03; Legato- Networker 6.0.1 with SnapImage v1.5. I hope this answers your questions

Hi all,
In first, Sorry to I am poor at English.
One of our custmer use F720 running with ONTAP5.3.2D4. They tried to backup to DLT7000 it connected to Sun by remote dump command. However,Dump dose not work with few messsages from NetApp. DLT7000 dose work locally by ufsdump command.
Please let me know, any infomations. More details as following:

rsh from E450: E450# rsh NetApp dump 0fub E450:/dev/rmt/0 63 /home E450: premature EOF DUMP: Remote tape cannot be initialized. DUMP: DUMP IS ABORTED
result of mt command E450# mt -f /dev/rmt/0 status Sun DLT7000 tape drive: sense key(0x0)= No Additional Sense residual= 0 retries= 0 file no= 0 block no= 0

Come on, pull the other one!
We wrote our NetApp filer dumps over the network to tape drives on Sun (Solaris) boxes for, hmmm, about 5 years. I even managed to recover a few files from such dumps from time to time ... :-)
Of course, proper rmt protocol interworking is needed, and those "premature EOF"s don't sound as though things are working right at that level.
